Review of Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale
Going to start this with this: I didn't hate the anime. I enjoyed it, but it had its flaws with basic characters personalities/traits and overdone tropes. Story: 7 Originally a 6 but I loved the ending message a lot. It appears that the ending was glanced over a lot by other viewers, but I believe this movie is worth watching for the ending message. (Explanation in the spoiler section below) Art: 8 Action was good and the visual character design for Yuna and Eiji were just beautiful. There was also a scene that is not 'action' but was stunningly done in a way that appeared almostaction-like. (Note in spoiler section)
Sound: 8
Music by Yuki Kajiura is always pretty damn amazing, also note: I watched it subbed so I don't have any comments about the dubbing. There are moments that are so nostalgic because of the music, it made me so giddy when watching.
Character: 6
It could have been a 7 if they had explained Yuna and Eiji's background and relationship a little more. The main cast characters are exactly the same as you would expect from the anime, but Yuna and Eiji were such beautiful characters and explained rather briefly which was a little disappointing. After watching the movie, I looked up Yuna and Eiji's stories and they were far more interesting than how they were portrayed in the movie.
Enjoyment: 7
Was a 6, but I loved the message. Also, there was a scene that I absolutely adored as someone who liked the anime. (Note in spoiler section)
Overall: 7
Was going to be 6, but again, I adored the ending... and also I love Yuna and Eiji's character designs
Would I recommend this movie for someone who didn't like the anime?
Not in particular. But for the message, I would say maybe give it a try. I'm pretty sure this movie won't change any opinions on SAO's crappy plot holes and 'basicness', but the message that I keep damn talking about is something people can understand regardless of whether they like SAO or not.
But if SAO's bad plot holes and overused character tropes is something you HATE, I wouldn't recommend you watch it, even for the message, because it still suffers from typical SAO problems.
But for people who did like it, you'll probably enjoy it, but I just want you to pay attention to the ending, there was a very nice message that appears to generally be glossed over a lot when reviewing this movie and majorly unappreciated.
(Movie/anime/light novel spoiler warning)
Story:
The message, which is a bit of a spoiler, is that they added a note to the second edition of the SAO book that paid respect to Yuna and the other people who died in-game. It was such a nice reminder/message. To not focus only on those in the spotlight/frontlines, but also take time to appreciate those behind it, the people who supported them and the cause. For me, it was saved the movie from just being fan service of seeing all the characters again on screen to being an actual movie with some kind of substance, which some spin-off anime movies can be. Fan service movies with little substance.
Art:
I loved Yuna's live performance. They animated her movement so beautifully, it almost felt reminiscent of a fight sequence.
Enjoyment:
When they got the entire cast back together for the final fight, I was so damn giddy with nostalgia, I was grinning non-stop. Definitely fan service, but I still damn enjoyed it.
