Review of High School of the Dead
What tugs you, pulls you, and lavishes you -- manifesting a sensation that is incredibly invigorating? That is Survival, the will to survive, a sensation that every person, no, every living thing yearns for and grasps with such high intensity for it is what determines life and death. This concept of survival is the main attraction of High School of the Dead. Indeed, there are those who may watch it for its fanservice, action, or gore, but in my opinion the concept of survival in the midst of an apocalypse delivers a greater purpose with valued intentions for the viewer to indulge into such athrill. However, many protest the plot of this story, stating that the fanservice is overwhelming and futile, which may be true but if one is capable of putting oneself past that, they will find the jewel of this series' concept.
I am not here to dispute whether or not the series could have been better, but rather to discuss the series itself, as a whole and considerably the plot that formulates this recipe of a thriller. In addition, there are those who condemn the plot, stating that it is banal or insufficient but what they fail to perceive is its purpose. A story does not make itself interesting, it is the purpose of the story that makes up that story. Many forget the purpose of this series or are either dearth from insight to perceive what lies beneath the surface-- that is the urge to survive. Throughout the series these faith-bound characters consistently fight to ensure their survival. Despite how shallow or lack of depth they may contain, these characters posses the potency to keep living while there are those around them, dieing, conceding to the relentless bind of the zombies. It is this heroic aspect set by the characters' actions that define the characters themselves, yet it is also this concept that attracts the viewer into watching more and more of this show-- the concept that there are so many people dieing around them, the protagonists could die at any instant themselves. This is the true nature of the show; what reviewers should be talking about, how the thrill of death and adrenaline burgeoned from an apocalypse causes a strike in a person, signaling the urge of survival, but also in contrast the will to settle into normalcy; fear of change in their natural habitat that thus causes the demise of those who forget to do what it takes to survive.
