Review of High School of the Dead
I enjoyed this anime and bought the series DVD with graphic novel Omnibus as well for my library. However, after the lack luster attempt at maintaining my interest in the series with the release of 'Highschool of the Dead: Drifters of the Dead' I have given up on this series. The mangaka and the animators have moved on to other projects with little mention of continuing the series. Anime that utilize 'fan service' can become epics but, most become 'one hit wonders'. If it is still on their 'to do' list, there are no indicators it will be anytime soon or for that matter, any better than thisepisode.
But, as with all apocalypse (death by zombie) genres, I was hoping for a good series with a well established beginning (character establishment during the 'event' and the creation of the 'new' reality), a solid middle (development of the cause and effect and further character development and interaction) and an end (where either the human's triumph, face their ultimate extinction or unknown future) without defaulting to 'deus ex machina' or gratuitous echhi throughout.
Echhi? Yes!
HSOTD started out well, establishing that this was a human extinction event - a global event of unknown origin and 'fleshing' out the characters so to speak (Love Saeko!).
But, after the release 'High School of the Dead: Drifters of the Dead' I have given up on this series.
