Review of A Certain Magical Index
Toaru Majutsu no Index, a good, sometimes enjoyable series to watch. It has quite a few story arcs in it, with each arc concentrating on a particular character but mostly it's different scenarios for the protagonist, Toma. Before I start, I'd like to adjust the rating of this anime according to what I saw. I'd rate it an average PG-13 anime. There's not much of violence or profanity in it to rate it a R-17. Story 8/10: The whole anime is about espers and sorcerers in Academy City, a city of espers/students. I can't really say it's got one storyline since the series is divided into arcseach having it's own story. So, you can say it's kinda like Naruto or One Piece when it comes to different stories/arcs. If I were to give a major storyline I would say it's about the life of an esper and a sorcerer and some of their esper and sorcerer friends who fight bad guys together or separately, whatever the case may be.
Sci fi isn't as sci fi as you'd think. They just put esper powers in sci fi since the Academy City deems those powers scientific and capable of improvement using science. As for the magic part, there are the magicians/sorcerers. Sometimes the arcs would be based on sci fi and sometimes they will be based on magic. That's how the series is.
Almost every arc ends with a fight. Yeah, that's pretty much what the anime is. It's not bad, it's pretty good. While watching some episodes, I didn't realize how soon they ended. They were pretty damn neat. And the story doesn't get you bored, it's all good.
Art 8/10:
Decent artwork. Nice animation. Just what you'd expect from a 2009 anime. The graphics and animation give the feeling of a good old anime. Nothing too distinct, it's just good.
Sound 7/10:
I think I liked a few songs in the series but not so much that I'd download their full versions.
Character 8/10:
Firstly, let's talk about the protagonist, Toma. Failure of a student, unique ability, good looking and your typical good guy. Will stand in front of evil if it's to protect someone. Will give good dialogues when the situation is down. "Never give up" spirit. Funny and a bit of an accidental pervert. You pretty much get the idea what he's like. Since he is the focus of the whole anime, you really get to know him well. There aren't any holes in his story or past. All the info needed to know is given.
Second comes Index. A nun/magician who lives/freeloads with Toma. Her meeting with Toma is an accident and she is also one of the big reasons Toma gets into those magic troubles. Her story is explained quite well in the first arc. So, she concentrates more on the magic side of the anime.
Then there are friends, enemies and some other guys who help progress the series. Misaka Mikoto holds importance as the sci fi side of the anime. The characters are divided into magic and sci fi and they hold more importance depending on which type of story arc the anime is in i.e. magic or sci fi.
Enjoyment 8/10:
The anime is enjoyable at times and sometimes it's just passable. The sci fi side was my favorite and I found myself eager to watch those arcs when they started. As for the magic side of the anime, it was sometimes good when my favorite characters showed up but otherwise it wasn't that good. But you do get some eye candy but very rarely which is a bit of a let down given the awesome characters.
Overall, I think this anime is good for a long series since it's got a sequel. A nice story and good action. Some romance possibility is there too but that's mostly up to the fan's imagination.
For me, Misaka X Toma FTW!!!
