SI-VIS: The Sound of Heroes · review
Had this aired in the 2000s or early 2010s, it'd be one of the classics for sure. The main cast is very standard in their roles and arcs, but the villain cast, while joining late, is interesting and flavorful in a way that heightens the overall show. There's respect and love put into the villains, so they feel like characters just as much as the main cast. Episode 21 and 24 showcase that, without respect for the antagonists those episodes couldn't come to be. The animation doesn't knock it out the park 99% of the time, sadly, but the voice performances are incredible throughout. In particular, SakuraAyane shows the best performance I had the pleasure to hear from her in Siren, and I can only hope they give her more roles like this going forward.
The twists in the script are pretty efficient and can even be surprising at times, but, like the characters, are mostly straightforward as you'd expect from a show like this, but I always appreciate a story that goes beyond winning/losing, killing/dying, and manages to make its battles about something of greater or smaller scale.
There are about two songs which didn't land well with me, but all the others are certified bangers which can carry the emotion the animation may fail to for some big moments. Personally, coming out of a music series not interested in hearing any of the songs is what I consider a death sentence, and SI-VIS delivers from EP1 to EP24 in the musical department flawlessly.
PS: They don't let the lesbian confess her feelings, but the MC also doesn't, so while I wish she did, I feel they just stayed true to their setting of "idol industry" and didn't let the "fans" find out who's dating who, and I can forgive that.
