Mabataki no Oto · review
Your enjoyment of this work will depend on two things. 1) Whether or not you have read Shuzo Oshimi's works and liked them 2) Whether or not you are interested in Shuzo Oshimi is a person. Sound of a Blink (瞬きの音, Mabataki no Oto) is closer to an autobiography than a traditional manga. It tells the story of its author trying to come to terms with not having cared enough for his younger brother, who has passed away. Don’t expect any major twists or dramatic developments. If you’ve read works by Shuzo Oshimi before, you’ll already have a sense of the kind of person he is. This book willmainly appeal to those who are interested in understanding him more deeply—especially how his personal experiences (such as his stutter) and the people in his life (like his mother) have influenced the characters in his stories.
The artwork is very unconventional and rough. Some pages are made up of scribbles, with handwritten text scattered throughout. This style reinforces the feeling of being inside the author’s mind, but it’s certainly not a visually polished manga.
I personally enjoyed it as an autobiographical work, but it’s not something I would recommend to readers who are unfamiliar with the author or are looking for an exciting, plot-driven story.
