BakéGyamon · review
Bakegyamon is a hidden gem that most people have never heard about and will never hear about due to its scarcity both online and physically, which is a shame given its quality. It's a shonen inspired by different manga like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, but it isn't derivative of them. Bakegyamon manages to carve out its own identity among the "Creature Battling" sub-genre of shonen with a very enjoyable story. The characters of the story have multiple dimensions with layers onto why they compete to win Bakegyamon, ranging from curing terminal illnesses to having a field, and you can't help but love each of them. They don't need a traumatic backstory to be memorable and relatable.
The story isn't groundbreaking, but it doesn't need to re-invent the wheel to be good. It executes its narrative very well and kept me engaged throughout its 5 volumes.
The art isn't Berserk/Sun-Ken rock levels of quality, but it is still of very good quality, even with this being the author's first completed series.
I highly recommend giving Bakegyamon a shot for anyone who's read/watched Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, or similar.
