Review of Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale
A week ago I had the opportunity to watch this movie, and I must say i was sufficiently satisfied with it.I think the movie gives a new perspective to the series, and it was definitely enjoyable Story:8/10,Character:8/10 The Sword Art Online franchise had received many criticisms over the years, many criticizing its plot, story, and the character development in general. However, this movie rebutts most of the arguments against the series.I'll list down some of the most famous issues in SAO and show how the movie solves it 1)Kirito-God-Kun In the past series,Kirito was portrayed as this overpowered MC(which is not an exaggeration considering the fact that he literally deflected bullets using a light saber lol),andthis sparked considerable criticism towards the show. However,in the movie,he becomes more vulnerable and maybe more "human",as the new game;Ordinal Scale uses Augmented Reality rather than Virtual Reality, which means Kirito HAD to do something to become a pro in the game, rather than just acing it from the get go which is quite refreshing.
2)Asuna
I think this is another part that the movie that was executed rather well. After the first season of SAO,there were concerns that Asuna would become just another shallow and weak character for Kirito to save. And despite she still became the target of yet another attack, she maintained her strong character throughout the movie, and eventually became the hero(or heroine) of the day
3)Kirito/Asuna relationship
Considering the fact that they spent AT LEAST 2-3 years of dating in the past, the lack of romance between Asuna and Kirito infuriated a lot of us,and rightly so.However,in this movie, the relationship between the two became one of the more apparent underlying premise, and its satisfying to watch the relationship of the two go further.
Art:10/10
One of the few positives from the SAO series were definitely the art, they look crisp, the colours vibrant and even the monsters looks cool. This movie brought the art to another level tho, especially during battles. In SAO II,action scenes were usually short and not necessarily awe-inspiring.In Ordinal Scale, the action scenes were fun to watch, especially during the final battle.I swear the god it was EPIC AS HELL!!!
Sound:9/10
I have no problems with the sound,I think most of the music used are appropriate and suitable.I really like the sound that they used when the characters slice and chop down monsters though.
Enjoyment:9/10
Definitely enjoyed it
Overall:8/10(+1 if you're a fan of the franchise)
I am a fan of SAO yes,but i still think that you will enjoy the movie nontheless. The action scenes, the driving plot,I think its more than enough to keep you entertained throughout the 130 minutes(tho there's some part that might be a bit boring).I watched the movie with a friend of mine who never watched SAO before,(i gave him a quick lecture on the characters beforehand, obviouly)and he said he enjoyed it so yeah i dont think there's any reason you would be dissapointed
