Review of Devilman: Crybaby
Netflix kicks off 2018 with an exciting and heartbreaking new anime produced by Misaka Yuasa. Devilman: Crybaby is loosely based off the 1970’s manga by Go Nagai. It sets a scene in a world where demons and humans struggle to coexist. Akira Fudo, a below average high school student, is possessed by Amon, a demon. Akira transforms into a devilman, a demon with a human heart. With the help of his friend Ryo, Akira deals with his new body and attempts to rid the world of demons. However, he soon learns that Ryo, and the world, is not as innocent as they seem. Devilman: Crybabydoes not disappoint and gives viewers what other animes will not: An uncensored version of what a corrupt world looks like. From parties where few return home and the survivors have superhuman abilities, Netflix develops the main characters well, despite having only 10, twenty-three minute episodes. Although the disappearance of some characters is unclear, easter eggs are there to fill in who’s missing.
However, this anime is not for the faint-hearted. The animation provides a graphic story with more than enough gore and sex to fulfill one’s desire. As a person who has seen the series twice, it is definitely NOT a family friendly show. As a matter of fact, watching at night with the door shut is the most appropriate way to watch Devilman: Crybaby. The dark room best captivates the anime’s flow and animation style.
Overall, the anime is a four out of five stars. Character development is spectacularly, and provides more than enough information to viewers. The end of the story can not be predicted and is actually a surprise. If a viewer can manage to get past the gore and lust portrayed in Devilman: Crybaby, it is a must watch for 2018!
