Review of The Ancient Magus' Bride
I would like to briefly summarize what I liked about the series, and also one of its defects, but properly in the original material. Let's start with the commendable parts: 1) The series as a whole has an excellent world-building that shows us the magic in a world that has forgotten about it, as well as how it affects few individuals who still interact with it. 2) The development of the characters was really exquisite, but it took a long time for a concrete maturation, which in the end led to a satisfactory conclusion of both developments. 3) The secondary characters had a good development, though not ascomplete. But that added a lot more depth to their relationship with the two main characters and the kind of support they would be from then on.
4) The traumatic past of the character was very salutary at the end of the series, because somehow it showed that the worst time in the character's life was not his daily scourge of seeing supernatural beings, but the trauma itself that he could not overcome.
Now the questionable parts, however, irrelevant to the whole of the work:
1) The dynamics of the series really was slow, and some parts where the episode could end up bridging to the next, so to give a climactic point to the next episode was underappreciated.
2) The protagonist's dangerous journeys were becoming very obvious. The nuance of her always put herself in danger, or always be in trouble when alone left things somewhat anti-climatic.
3) Although it was a different theme from the usual studio Wit, the animation was wishing to have lost its brightness throughout the second cour of the series, which shows that Wit is still establishing itself as a studio, precisely because it is made up of a small team . Even so, this is still a disability, the studio has had a few years to organize.
4) The soundtrack lost its luster too, because it could be much better used in this final bow, which was not! If the director had dared a little more he might have created somewhat better climates in that sense.
Overall it was a good series. I, in particular, am not much interested in themes of fantasy and Slice of Life. I've heard of great anime such as Natsume Yuuijinchou, The Eccentric Family and Kyoukai in the Rinne. But if I were to say today if I became interested, I would say that this work was the gateway. Before I need to make a few comments here: many people will complain about some of the points I mentioned, but the same ones in previews and other pre-work postings spoke wonders about how they liked the original material. To criticize a work having in hand the original material, being that the same one was adapted of correct way, for me this is lack of character! Therefore, I who did not read the original material assure that it is a great series, that has its problems, but that in the set of the work is really good.
