Review of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
This series was a victim of its own hype, unfortunately. With it being the #1 anime here and with so much love showed for it, one can’t but expect it to be absolutely brilliant. And it just isn’t… I appreciate the overall style of the show. It’s a stark contrast to the shonen series that most people associate with anime. That is a bit of a double edged sword, though. While it is nice to be able to take a leisurely stroll in the Autumn sunset, a story still needs to be told. 28 episodes and there just wasn’t much substance. There were very few likablecharacters. Counterpoint to that is there were very few dislikable characters. Nobody made much of an impact and those that did were only able to do so in a one-off, flavor of the week manner. Honestly, this show just made me want to see more of what happened before journey’s end.
No matter what genre of anime or any show in general, the critical factor of liking it or not is how much I want to see more. This took me over a year to finish. I just didn’t care enough to watch the next episode. I’m happy I watched it and I’ve recommended it to friends, but I can’t say I’m looking forward to more.
Happy to move on to something else now. I guess, brilliantly, that’s the whole theme of the anime.
