well, i think this is my new favorite part of kaiji. it doesnt stray too far from the usual script, huge wins leading to crushing lows, only to be brought back by a thread of hope, all packaged into long, intense rounds of games. or more specifically in most cases, kaiji using his intuition and wit to get himself out of life or death games, the "game" this time being a japan-wide (exaggerating a little) manhunt for kaiji and his two new friends as they try to escape with their newly obtained riches. kaiji is still trying to intuit what cards his opponent might have, butits metaphorical this time, and with a much bigger scope. its a constant game of information with teiai networking across prefectures, picking up sightings or intuiting something of their own, and kaiji and crew having to respond to it with their own schemes.
its fun, if i had to say anything about it. its fun to see kaiji in the open world and enjoying his time every once in a while when the story allows for it. the side characters are also better in this, too. kaiji had alright side characters before this, but this part really tries to flesh the existing ones out and give us new ones to care about, and it works. its also easily the funniest part because of all the brevity it and the new characters allow, but if youve read kaiji, you know that "what goes up must come back down," and this is where this part REALLY shines.
take kaiji's wit and planning and stick him in an open city where hes being genuinely gangstalked, use troublesome-or-worse unforeseen events and a constant information tug of war as the "games" of the part, write it in a way where even if they ARE in the open world this time, theyre never too far from being caught, finally slap a bunch of great characterization of old characters and a bunch of fun new characters, and you have part 6. i really enjoyed it, and im sad to have caught up with all of kaiji.
