Review of Fire Force

This new wave of shounen seems more steeply based in power systems than any era prior. Enen no Fire Force's twist is that every power has to be somehow loosely based on fire or heat. They still manage to get really creative within those confines, and part of the fun is trying to guess what wacky pseudo-science they're going to use to explain the next guy's crazy power. Like how do you make an ice power work? Electricity? Some of the explanations are pretty good, and for the most part they try to be based in real science... but then some of them are justmagic. Like how does the Lucky Lecher power work? How is that fire related? Is it a real power or just a quirk of being a girl in a shounen anime?

Anyway I like the characters well enough. The subversion of that overly happy looking guy turning out to be super unhinged crazy was pretty neat. King Arthur not being a a blonde sword girl for once is a new twist, wish more anime had that. Shinra is pretty bland as far as protagonists go, but it's basically what I've come to expect from the genre. I give it an 8/10 overall.
