Code Geass is a Japanese anime series by Sunrise Studios. Sunrise is known for its mecha anime such as Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, etc. The characters are designed by Clamp that’s why they look like they came straight out of Cardcaptor Sakura. The story is set on an alternate reality wherein the world is conquered by the Holy Britannian Empire, the Chinese Federation, and the European Union. The focus is on Japan (now renamed Area 11) who lost their freedom to the advance knightmare frames of Britannia. Code Geass is definitely one of the best anime ever made. It features great mecha fights, exciting battle of wits, and has one of the most fulfilling anime endings ever. Personally, Lelouch Vi Britannia (Jun Fukuyama) is the most complex and the most intriguing character in anime history. His wit and charisma carries the whole series throughout and despite many of his questionable actions, you will always get behind his cause and ideals. Suzaku Kururugi (Takahiro Sakurai) is a less exciting deuteragonist whose moral values contrast Lelouch’s. Despite their difference in views, it’s fun to see them overcome their obstacles when they work together. Code Geass succeeds with its many different colorful characters in creating an anime that perfectly exemplifies the complex moralities of humans. It’s an anime that teaches you about the lesson of preparation and necessity, as quoted from Lelouch “The only ones who should kill, are those who are prepared to be killed.”

Overall Code Geass will make you laugh, think, and perhaps tear a bit (I didn’t) in some of its episodes. To those who haven’t watched this masterpiece and into anime like Death Note and mecha anime with a fantastic plot, then I highly recommend watching Code Geass.
