Review of City Hunter

Overall, I'm pretty mixed on the show. The first few episodes got me hooked and the ending was satisfying, but the middle was a pretty mixed bag. The biggest issue with this series is the lack of variety in jokes. There is 1. Ryo is a perv! 2. Kaori slams Ryo with a hammer for being a perv and 3. Kaori is a tomboy! There tends to be some variety with Ryo's perversion and how Kaori is bullied for being a tomboy, but the hammer joke gets real old real fast. There is only a handful of times they shake up the hammer joke, buta vast majority of the time it is the same stale punchline. The show can have some interesting set-ups and funny jokes, but the hammer joke just felt like a crutch for the writers when they didn't have any ideas, and it was the main reason it took me so long to push through all the episodes.

With that said, if you can look past the occasional episode that abuses the hammer joke way too often, you'll sometimes be rewarded with other episodes that use it sparingly and are often the more memorable episodes in the series. If you don't feel too annoyed or underwhelmed with the hammer joke, I'd easily recommend the series. However, if you do find the same exact joke used over and over, I wouldn't force yourself to watch through the show in its entirety.

Other final notes:
The intro for the first half is very stylistic and is backed with a real distinct song, while the second half of the series' intro was something I eventually skipped. It has the style visually, but the song is lacking. GET WILD AND TOUGH was a great outro though.

It's not an intentional joke, but spotting the mandatory M&Ms advertisement sparkled in every episode starting in the second half was pretty funny. Sometimes it'll make sense being a literal packaging of M&Ms, but other times it can be found in strange spots seeing that the creators had some contract they had to fulfil.
