One Way or Another · review
Based on the web novel by Mao Ni, these 16 episodes only begin to hint at the larger storyline. Whether there will be another season (or seasons) is pretty much unknown at this time. Most of Mao Ni's works end up doing well as live action adaptations (Joy of Life, Ever Night, Ze Tian Ji); donghua, not so much. That being said, this is more of a self-contained atmospheric piece than a full-on retelling of Adventure, given that it only covers what is essentially Prologue for the novel. What we are given is marvelous. Fantasy and mystery play a big role, along with characterizationsthat are softer than implied within the novel.
Consider this a gateway to reading the novel and anticipate a much different tone there. Some things simply do not translate well between mediums.
Story: 6/10.
Not because it is weak, but because it is intentionally limited. This is Prologue; the thunder in the distance before the storm arrives.
Animation and Art: 7/10.
Clean CG with consistent character acting. Not extravagant, but visually cohesive.
Sound: 7/10.
Solid voice work and music that supports the fantasy/mystery tone.
Characters: 7/10.
They fit the adaptation’s gentler approach, even if they are softer than implied in the novel.
Enjoyment: 10/10.
For me, this is a delightful self‑contained piece. Outside the context of the novel, it becomes a memorable experience on its own terms.
Overall: 10/10.
Not because it’s complete, but because it succeeds in providing a quiet, mysterious, beautifully crafted gateway into the world Mao Ni creates in the novel.
