Return of the Mount Hua Sect · review
Chapters read at the moment: 480 Genres setting: ROTMHS (Return of the Mount Hua Sect) is an example of Wuxia fiction belonging to the 'New Wuxia Movement', particularily in a Wulin (Korean: Murim) setting in Jianghu (Korean: Kangho). Most of the tropes in ROTMHS are taken from other authors as Wulin fiction and Wuxia in general is a genre/setting that has been developed by various different authors, with the earliest depictions relating to ancient texts. Plot summary: 1.The story begins with the end of the great all-out war of Jianghu against the Great Demon Sect. Much much credit to the Plum Blossom Sword Saint of Mount Hua, thestrongest warrior in Jianghu, Chung Myung, they manage to win, but... at what cost?
2.A hundred years later Chung Myung gets regains consciousness in another body, and after realising that, he begins to train so that he can re-enter Mount Hua, seeing this as a perfect opportunity to become an even stronger version of his past self.
3.But then, upon entering the sect, he is smitten by all sorts of unexpected discoveries. All in all, what it meant was that the great Mount Hua sect, which once stood at the top of the world, was now completely fallen and hanging unto a thin rope at the end of a cliff.
4.Having realised that much, if not everything, is the result of the negligence of his former self to take on disciples and teach them and make them as strong as him, he feels deep guilt, shame and regret, and decides to do whatever it takes to return the sect to its past glory, being forced to face all sorts of troubles, some of which being to be put into life-and-death situations. All of that while hiding his identity as the former Plum Blossom Sword Saint.
Originality:
1.Like I wrote, most tropes are taken from former works, but just that in itself doesn't make it unoriginal. If it did, then Naruto, Bleach, Jujutsu Kaisen and Hunter x Hunter would each be shameless rip-offs of Yu Yu Hakusho. Of course that is an exaggeration, but say fighting anime, a lot of anime that are about fighting have the same tropes (including drawn-out battles) and other than the characters, abilities and their rules, there often isn't much else to make it distinct from other fighting anime or give it a particular reason to watch.
2.What makes ROTMHS original is mostly its balance between its untiring comedy and seriousness that is almost always interesting to read. The main protagonist, Chung Myung, is an old man in the body of a child. He may be the epitome and human embodiment of almost each cardinal sin, but not lust so fortunately you aren't reading a romance. At least it is clear that the main protagonist won't find romance, but that doesn't matter since that Taoist's already so much in love with meat and alcohol!
3.The main protagonist is very talented and what gives him an even bigger boost is his knowledge and wisdom from his past life. Still, being reincarnated into the body of a nobody without any internal chi, and where power scaling is relative and doesn't just fall out of the sky, the main protagonist and his core members each experience truly difficult situations where you often have no clue how they are going to make it out alive.
4.All-in-all, the MC isn't your typical reincarnated and/or regressed powerhouse. He doesn't become overpowered overnight and attain an arrogant laid-back attitude. He is talented and gets strong pretty fast, sure, and is arrogant, sure, but definitely not in a way where you're looking at a harem isekai or contemporary/futuristic fantasy or whatever. The MC has an actual interesting personality.
5.All-in-all, ROTMHS is neither a poor man's (of a poor man's) nor goonerbait.
Pain points:
-For the first 100 or so chapters the MC often gets into situations where the answer appears to him like a lightbulb that suddenly starts glowing above his head, or he can just violently beat his way out of it. Again, it doesn't stay like that, and given that this story has close to 2000 chapters and still gets updated (not to forget that it started in 2021!!!), I daresay it doesn't stay like that for the majority of the story even though I'm only on about 25%.
-In the early chapters there are also moments when fighting situations get drawn out so that the MC can do some aura farming. Not cringe imo, but that's probably my opinion since I'm already much further in the story and understand the MC and the writer better than I did back when I was reading this series through the webtoon adaptation (it adapts chapters 1-152)
-To me personally the fighting and humor doesn't get tiring, but to some it does.
-If you're interested in romance, I don't know if this is the place to look since it hasn't appeared yet.
Good points:
-Original
-Funny
-Interesting plot and narrative
-Some very deep monologues and dialogues
-Interesting original MC with genuine aura 😎
Bonus points:
-Close to 2000 chapters, started in 2021, so if you'd divide that through 4 (2025-2021) you'd get 500. It is likely that the author already had a bank with chapters and other prepared content before releasing the first chapter, but even so it is incredible how far he's come in such a short time.
Final thoughts:
ROTMHS is one of my favorite works of fiction at the moment. It covers everything so well, although I would've never started it if I didn't read the Webtoon first. I recommend reading the Webtoon/Manhwa first to boost your imagination for the series and to get through the chapters that are honestly less interesting faster. IMO the 152 chapters that the Webtoon covers (season 1 & 2) aren't enough to give you a *very* clear image of where the story is going to, but for the most part it would be enough to see whether you want to continue with it or not.
