Review of Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale

This is a spoiler free review of SAO Ordinal scale. Art/sound- Similarly to the show the sword art online movie brought along some wonderful art, animation, and sound. There are lots of things to nitpick this franchise for but this category is not one of them. Story- The story did a good job of sprinkling in some comedy as well as symbolism which is something I can appreciate. Unfortunately it was also packed with a couple cliches and a lot of convenient plot devices to keep the story going. I won't get into all that so I don't spoil anything. It was not amazing but it wasa nice story that kept me interested most of the time throughout the entire movie. I was mostly relieved that they decided not to build tension through rape like they usually do.

Characters- Bringing the same characters back brings back the same issues as well. At the begging they try to get it through your head that Kirito is not the invincible plot armor god that he once was but then that randomly gets thrown out and he turns back into himself at a convenient time in the movie. One thing I will say though is that I really liked Yuna's character. She has an awesome design and backstory to boot. Her story and character really helped carry this movie.

Overall- If you liked the show you will love this movie. If you're like me and you think that the show had some really good ideas that were executed poorly then you will have similar feelings about this movie. That being said it was still entertaining and I am glad I got to see it in theaters.
