Review of Dorohedoro
The story details the struggle between a post-apocalyptic human city, and the world of sorcerers. You'd expect some faceless bad guys, but here in lies the twist, you actually get to see the other side and their lives, giving them a lot of character and leaving me conflicted on who I should be rooting for, as they both have likeable traits. The 3D anime aesthetic can be a turnoff for many, but it is executed well here I say, it is enjoyable to look at. Sound design is fine, fits the atmosphere. The characters are good, Nikaido is fun, Kaiman is a romp and I'm very interestedin his predicament, and the sorcerers are fun to see. But for all the show has going for it, my biggest gripe with the show as a whole really is Chota, he feels like a walking stereotype that should have stayed in the early 2000's where the Manga comes from. Scenes with him really spoil whatever good they had, and the fact that he doesn't really go away but becomes more prominent is a big sore spot. Don't know how bad he is in the Manga, but this version really sours everything.
So will you like watching it? Overall I'd say yes, the setting and story are interesting, and you'll want to see where it goes. I really wanted to like it more but that character really is the very rotten cherry on top of the cake, stains the whole frosting and as it stands you can't take it off without compromising the experience, so it is a solid 6 from me at the time of watching.
