Review of Tokyo Revengers
Season 1: 7/10 (wrote a paragraph for every point i took off). The main issue with S1 is undoubtedly the sad excuse of a protagonist (Takemichi) who never seems to evolve. Whether it be his inexistent fighting skills or weak mindset backed with flimsy courage, it wouldn't be an understatement to say that he's the most pathetic protagonist I've come across yet... S2 is such a game changer because it makes viewers reflect back and realize that the growth of Takemichi was ultimately very realistic- one doesn't become a skilled fighter just from integrating a streetgang, nor is one always courageous when facing adversity. Takemichi isn't your usual OP, clever and fast-learning protagonist, he's just an average Joe living an unfulfilling life who's suddenly given an opportunity to change everything through his newfound time-travelling ability;
Which brings us to another problematic aspect of S1 which is how repetitive the cycle of traveling back and forth through time felt- It's obvious they were trying to highlight the helplessness of the whole situation aka the protagonist's countless failed attempts at saving those he loves, but the vicious cycle that is witnessing someone tragically dying at almost every episode makes the anime way too melodramatic -with little to no lighthearted/comedic moments to balance out all the heavy shit that's going down.
Tokyo Revengers isn't labelled as a romance anime, but the plot is (unfortunately) very centered around Takemichi's relationship with his girlfriend Hina as he mainly travels through time to try and save her from dying. What's bothersome is that Hina's character doesn't have any substance, her seemingly only purpose is to drive the plot forward. Takemichi, as the protagonist, is obviously the most fleshed out character, but Hina -despite the absurdly long screen time she gets- falls flat in every way. In fact, the Hina you see at the beginnning of S1 is the exact same Hina you'll see at the end of S3 -no evolution whatsoever.
BOTTOM LINE:
Although the first season might not seem promising, it does gets significantly better in S2 & S3. Dropping the series from the first season alone is an impulse some of you will get, but do give it a chance, because contrary to all expectations, S2 & S3 are absolute showstoppers.
