Review of A Whisker Away
This movie has been a very entertaining watch but is not special in any way. In my opinion, the plot is not that unique but it not bad or boring. More or less the story is a fantasy that has similarities with Studio Ghibli’s “The Cat Returns” except with that of the main male and female protagonists’ mindset/psychology. Although I think that the art style is good, in my opinion, the animation is a disappointment. The animation is way below the quality of the 2018 Studio Colorido’s film “Penguin Highway”. For a film, the animation I believe is not “cinematic”. Heck, some“meh” anime TV series has better animation.
As for the sound and music of the movie, I think the ending song (Ghost in a Flower by Yorushika) is very good, however, the overall movie soundtrack is very generic but I think it works just ok. The Japanese voice acting is not the best but it is not bad either.
It would have been better if the characters are more fleshed out, but for a movie with limited screen time, I guess it would have been the best character development the producers of the film could do. I would have preferred that the circumstances of why the mother of Miyo/Muge has left her are explored more, or that the resolution of the relationship between Miyo and her stepmother Kaoru is given more weight in the end.
Despite its shortcomings, “Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu” is a good watch and I will highly recommended this movie to all fans of anime.
