Review of I'm Standing on a Million Lives
100-man no Inochi no Ue ni Ore wa Tatteiru: The Coldness of Survival 100-man no Inochi no Ue ni Ore wa Tatteiru ("I'm Standing on a Million Lives") is an anime that tries to set itself apart from the typical isekai genre with a more cynical and pragmatic premise. The protagonist, Yusuke Yotsuya, isn't the archetypal hero who gladly accepts his new life in a fantasy world. Instead, he's a dispassionate sociopath, which gives his role in the missions a very particular perspective. The premise that characters don't have a fixed role and can change classes in each new mission is an interesting and original concept, breakingfrom the usual structure of these anime. This forces the characters to be more strategic and think outside the box. However, the script's execution doesn't always live up to this idea. The missions often feel repetitive, and the solutions are less ingenious than the anime pretends them to be.
The biggest weakness of the work is its characters. Aside from the protagonist, the rest of the cast is quite forgettable. Yotsuya's teammates are flat representations of anime archetypes without any real depth. While the anime tries to give them some development, especially to Iu Shindo, it feels forced and superficial. There is no emotional connection to make you care about them, which is a fatal flaw in a story where death is supposed to have weight.
The anime tries to explore themes like morality, the value of life, and utilitarianism, but it does so in a very literal way. Yotsuya explicitly states his cynical ideas rather than demonstrating them through his actions. The dialogue feels more like a basic philosophy class than a real conversation.
In summary, 100-man no Inochi no Ue ni Ore wa Tatteiru has a thought-provoking premise and some genuinely good moments, but it suffers from inconsistent execution, underdeveloped characters, and a script that fails to delve into the themes it introduces. It's an anime that has the ambition to be more than average but remains a failed attempt to break the mold.
