Review of Vinland Saga Season 2
Masterpiece is the only word to describe this season. While I claim that, it is sad to see so many people find this season boring and claim nothing is happening because season 1 started with a lot of action fighting, combat ability development, and tactical warfare to an extent. Most of the story moving forward Askeladd's death is not about those. It is about Thorfinn's journey through his life. This season goes full character and world development with the entire course, people around us, consequences of actions, self-reflection, inner demons, a self-made goal to strive for, compassion, the list can go on, it achieves peak character andworld development not for the character developing alone but also for those that understand what is happening to the said character thus also developing them according to it. Making every character an actual character with their own decisions, personalities, emotions, and actions.
For me, the masterpiece part comes from the fact that this "character pool" also includes the viewers watching the anime. Since the general messages and concepts apply to such simple and generic topics if you understand the story from season 1, IMO was pretty straightforward and told in general with not that many important nuances, this hits home with pinpoint accuracy. I was fully immersed as I watched this episode by episode as they released. And this was the most immersed anime I had experienced despite the lack of physical action most of the season is tackling mental problems and relationships between the characters. That is the action of this season. Not insane wars in the physical world but inside different characters' minds. To me, that was more amusing than season 1's action.
This season is similar to Punishment and Crime by Dostoyevsky in terms of its message to an extent. This anime might go down as an all-time classic top-tier.
