Review of Lazarus
"Lazarus" is an original work directed by ShinichirÅ Watanabe, renowned for classics such as "Cowboy Bebop" and "Samurai Champloo". The character design is by Chad Stahelski, director of the "John Wick" franchise, which already indicates a distinctive action and combat aesthetic. The soundtrack is composed by an all-star team, including the legendary Kamasi Washington, Floating Points and Bonobo, guaranteeing a rich and immersive sound that is characteristic of Watanabe's works. The premise of "Lazarus" transports us to the year 2054, a dystopian future where humanity has achieved a seeming utopia. A miracle drug called "Happy Heaven" has eradicated disease and suffering, promising a long and happylife for all. However, the drug's creator, neuroscientist Dr. Skinner, reappears after a three-year absence with a grim warning: "Happy Heaven" has a serious and unavoidable side effect. In just three days, everyone who has used it (i.e. most of humanity) will die.
To combat this imminent threat, a special task force is formed, made up of elite agents from around the world. Their mission is complex: find Dr. Skinner and develop a vaccine before time runs out for humanity.
First Impressions and Expectations
"Lazarus" promises to be a science fiction thriller with strong elements of action and mystery. Watanabe's direction is a seal of quality in itself, suggesting a well-constructed narrative, complex characters and impeccably choreographed action sequences. The dystopian setting, with its failed utopia and race against time, provides an intriguing backdrop to explore themes such as morality, the consequences of scientific progress and the very nature of happiness.
Chad Stahelski's contribution to character design should translate into striking visuals, especially in the combat scenes, which tend to be a strong point in action anime. The soundtrack, featuring such prominent names, will certainly be a crucial element in dictating the tone and atmosphere of the series, adding layers of depth to the emotions and narrative tension.
Although the anime "Lazarus" has only just begun to be released in 2025, the combination of talents involved and the intriguing premise already position it as one of the most anticipated and promising productions of the year. It is a work that certainly deserves the attention of science fiction and anime fans who seek a sophisticated visual and narrative experience.
