Review of Blood Blockade Battlefront
Kekkai Sensen Everything is available to create a really fascinating and individually bizarre story, just EVERYTHING! Well, at least everything except the bases and strings that should connect everything together. Kekkai Sensen is a collection of several concepts, from aliens, monsters, superpowers, divine beings and even vampires and another world. And on top of that, there's a relatively bizarre cast of characters with very amusing personalities and some really well-done humorous moments. But what to expect in the show, it's completely episodic. In both the first and second seasons, the episodes have no context and are hardly relevant, except to possibly introduce a new character. Furthermore, the main plot is almost record-breakingly unnecessary. Not only has it been boring, but it didn't achieve any results until the end. Every single normal comedy episode was better than the entire main plot of the first season.
[Story 3]
Interesting world that made me personally very curious to see what they would make of all these concepts. Answer is, nothing at all.
The world is empty, just some half-assed explanations and that's it. Most of the points are not even addressed. And the plot around one of the 13 kings who was the main antagonist of the first season is basically unnecessary.
His presence had no weight in this story and his whole presence was drenched in melodrama and pseudo-philosophical speeches.
There was a final fight at the end and tada, the first season is over! And the fact that the last episode lasted 40 minutes almost tortured me inside.
But along the way, most of the normal everyday episodes were very amusing and entertaining.
[Characters 3]
The characters could hardly have been more inane. Every single one of them is just a comedy character with no background and no depth. However, they were very good for creating some quality comedy scenes. That's about it, though.
-Among other things, it was weird how many VA from Gintama were present here. Until the end of the second season we had almost all the Gintama Voice Actors chopped off. And the fact that the protagonist had the same VA as Shinpachi made it hard for me to take his tantrums seriously. -
Black and White were 2 of the most boring, no the 2 most boring characters in the whole season. No personality, no charisma and no wit. Whether they were present or not would not have changed anything.
[Music 7]
A relatively decent intro, which at least made you curious about the anime. Also musically fairly alright.
The osts were high quality and lifted many scenes well.
Especially positive I must praise the outro, which is a real earworm and will definitely remain in my memory.
[Animations 7]
Varying from very dynamic, to slightly above average depending on the scene. The first episode swallowed most of the budget as you could almost see. Nevertheless, visually very attractive.
[Conclusion]
Kekkai Sensen was a shockingly entertaining anime, if you can overlook the story. This was a funny, likeable show and very enjoyable to watch. I didn't expect to be this well entertained despite the actual quality.
