Review of Land of the Lustrous
Right, so the FIRST time I watched this, I found myself impatiently awaiting some sort of excitement, crescendo, climax, action, drama, etc. The show appeared to dredge onwards, with little to say or show for itself. Sure, this may have been the best instance of CG employed in an anime to date... but where was the weight?!?! oh boy, I couldn't have been less ready for this time bomb. I've changed my rating on this anime 3 times now. Once while viewing, once a week after completion, and the final rating (10/10) upon a second viewing. I don't want to spoil anything here, so I'll just say: don'tgo into this with any expectations, don't read the spoilers, just watch and hopefully you'll enjoy the path of viewership that I was so fortunate to experience.
The art is obviously a 10/10... most of the time CG is ham-fisted into anime and comes across very poorly. This particular show is neither an anime or a CG anime... It is a god-tier perfect combination of medium necessary to achieve the end product (how fitting).
The story, 10/10 This is a minimalist approach to cerebral anime, a philosopher's anime even. If you're looking for a generic shounen or isekai, look elsewhere.
Sound: 10/10
Character.... character development is unusual, yet very natural in it's presentation. No, there isn't an episode devoted to each character. No, Deep exploration of each character's-well-character isn't really executed. But this show isn't an exercise in establishing things as they have been, it's an exposition of constant change and growth. Like horoscopes and other vague categorization, Houseki no Kuni grants us the freedom to apply a skeleton of relatable traits to our own personal reference material. No doubt you will gander "the sort of person" each character is meant to embody. 10/10
Enjoyment: 10/10. Like a mosquito bite, this anime proved irritating and small at first. With time, an insurmountable itch emerged... and let me tell ya, it has never felt SO good to scratch an itch.
Overall: You guessed it... 10/10. visually stunning, BRILLIANT voice acting (in Japanese at least), and this give just keeps on giving.
