Review of Pop Team Epic
Let's see... If you are a run of the mill seasonal anime fan you probably will not like this anime. As it has no real plot, character development, narrative, or even minuscule fan service. That being said this is one of the most enjoyable anime I've ever watched since it diverges from these cliches, and one thing PTE is, is original and creative. The first episode is chock full of mainstream references and cameos that any person who hasn't been under a rock for the past ten years will understand. Although as the series go on the references become a bit more obscure to thecommon internet goer. This is where PTE really goes all out and they're not afraid of the consequences with lawsuit enticing impressions and characters ripped straight from their franchise.
The art is always something to be impressed about. Apart from the 2d skits with Popuko and Pipimi, we have others like Hellshake Yano, and the felt dolls, and PTE tales of old, and of course BET (Bob epic team). These all diverge in art styles and a very creative in how the animators use the medium to tell the nonsensical story. Sound plays very closely along the same lines with the audio changing quality to fit the medium its being used in. Also the changing voice every episode and every 12 min segment is a fresh take on character diversity and really how hearing different voice actors from other terrific anime can really bring these two to life.
Popuko and Pipimi are hilarious as a duo and never have a dull moment together. I believe that Pipimi's passive aggressive attitude and (sometimes) nonchalant reactions fit perfect with Popuko's insane short-temper and bloodlust towards every living creature and (inanimate) that annoys her. They are a great diverge from moe high school SOL high school girls we get every season and I hope we got LOTS more of these two in the future.
I never had a dull moment with this show really. The different skits (after which the episode is titled) are always interesting and different every episode. I think anyone can appreciate all the work and dark humor they fit into twelve minutes because quite frankly it's damn impressive.
Overall, if you like dark, nonsensical, extremely meta humor you will love Pop team epic. Don't go in expecting a plot advancement or anything to really "happen". Just be ready to kick back and laugh at the absurdity and moxie this show has. Try not to think about Hellshake yano too much. :3
