Review of Nisekoi: False Love
Nisekoi can be seen as another generic harem romance show, or it could add to the genre, making it shine through the malignant mass of harems. Personally, it didn't do it for me. A sheer lack of story and generic characters makes it another square harem show, adding no sustenance to the already trash genre. What brings the score up is the overall animation and sound, which is expected coming from the same studio that animated the Monogatari series. Story - 6/10 Sometimes you look at the genres of an anime before watching, and you see various tags, such as slice of life, comedy, romance, harem, etc. What do you think? You haven't read the synopsis, and only saw the cover art for the series. You may think, "wow, this sounds like another generic series," or something along those lines. For Nisekoi, you would be right.
Now, the overall premise of the show is something I'm not too accustomed with, as I haven't seen too many series with the yakuza or gangs being involved, especially in a harem anime, so I guess you could say it was a breath of fresh air for me. But that was the only redeeming thing the series could muster up. It only played as a driving force for any sort of conflict during the series.
Art - 9/10
As mentioned before, this series is animated by Shaft. That being said, there of course is going to be givens, like the amount of head tilts in a given episode. All seriousness, they did a wonderful job animating dialogue, and kept a more dialogue heavy episode interesting, similar to what they did in the Monogatari series. The only thing that really irked me regarding the art-style is that every girl in the harem has the same exact facial structure and smile, only differentiating from from hair color/style and eyes.
Sound - 9/10
No character in this series had a voice that didn't sound like it matched them. With that, the soundtrack for the show was also good, matching the mood of the scene.
For the OP and ED though, I cannot say anything about, as I ended up watching the open-less and credit-less mode of the show, somehow.
Character - 6/10
Character-wise, this show also lacks, comparatively to the story. The same fault lies in the characters, as we have our generic tsundere (two really), perverted male friend of the MC, and square "good girl" that of course the MC has a crush on.
Enjoyment and Overall - 8/10 & 7/10
While the story and characters were very lackluster, the series somehow kept me entertained and even a little captivated with it. I didn't have issues in wanting to take breaks in between chunks of episodes, and I wanted to know what happens next, from the beginning to the end of the season. This plus Shaft-y animation and decent soundtrack and voices, I feel this series would deserve its score.
