Review of Tsukigakirei
At first glance I thought it was your generic romance-slice of life anime with all those very cliche elements being thrown all throughout. BUT OH BOY I WAS DEAD WRONG! The characters are your traditional highschool students but they weren't bland in any way, they are not dense and annoying. They had great chemistry and they were adorable together. Again, their character design was fairly generic in my opinion but this is to portray realism. I already had my expectations before watching it, I knew that there are going to be uneventful scenes which lacks dialog and movement from time to time asit is under the slice of life genre, but as soon as I started watching it I immediately noticed that the series did a wonderful job of using this stillness of scenes to imply the emotion and feelings of the characters.
Another thing I have observed is that the series wasn't trying so much to be unique regarding its plot and story. It instead embraced its normalcy and focused on the execution rather than combining complex elements, therefore the series doesn't feel forced.
I also liked how the main characters made a realistic goal for themselves and their relationship and worked together (in the form of support) to solve these underlying conflicts. They also reconcile and fixed the tension from outside party, thus making clear progress on their relationship.
The narrative was very notable, the conflict does not interrupt the flow of the series in any way. But the resolution really gives gratification in a sense that you can see the main character's effort exerted to resolve the problems they encounter and it eventually pays off.
The series was a combination of a linear story telling, cute art style, great music and soundtrack as well as a very likable and realistic characters. But aside from this, the strongest point of the entire series is that they never tried to be revolutionary or over the top, instead they focus on the execution and the actual implication of the actions of the characters and how they portrayed realism along with these elements.
Therefore, I also think that the series has very little to no flaws nor a persistent glaring problem. And what made this series even more special for me is that they were very creative in wrapping up the series (I don't see it as if they concluded the series out of convention as I feel this was a genuinely creative way to finish a series).
On a side note, that very last frame was very satisfying as it perfectly sums up the series.
An exceptionally wholesome and well-crafted romance-slice of life anime.
