Review of Noragami Aragoto
Noragami is not perfect, despite whatever the masses shout. Now I love this anime, and it is great, but there are very big noticeable flaws which I will go through in a minute. I will try to keep it spoiler free but there will be scarce details on the final fight My first biggest complaint is that this show is a weird ''Frankenstein's monster'' of Slice of Life, Comedy and Action. One minute Yato might be snooping in girls bathrooms spraying his number onto the walls, the next minute Hiyori is going to some festival with this boy she likes (who isn't important at all sofar in the anime, but gets a lot of screentime and the final scene leaves a lot to be desired from him.) If you like fusions of genres, check this one out, but if you're looking for a pure action, this may not be for you.
Second, the ending was Deux Ex Machina. I'll have to give scarce details here. Yato and Bishamon are trapped in hell and have to battle the immortal God of Hell to escape. They're losing of course, but then Daikoku pulls a fuckin' Ora Ora out of his ass and says that Hiyori can use a ''Soul Call'' to bring them back. What the fuck? This wasn't mentioned at all in any episode prior, its literally just brought up to get the characters out of a corner the author wrote himself into. But oh no! Yato hasn't told anyone his real name because they'll know he used to be a really evil god!!!!!!1!! Literally makes no sense. But then Hiyori uses the POWER OF ONYOMI AND KUNYOMI to GUESS Yato's real name! What bullshit is that! It comes out of nowhere and only happens to add some conflict to such an easy way out
Third, the pacing near the end is terrible! Yato is held hostage by one of his past Regalias, but then literally in one shot it cuts to a month later. What?!?!?! A month passed in the time it took to change the camera angle?! Ebisu's arc was also a massive letdown, they couldn't do it in 5 episodes. He should have been introduced wayy sooner. I had no reason to root for him or to care when he does anythng with weight.
Anime often has the problem of over-complicating plot points, but Noragami, the genius anime that it is, manages to avoid this hurdle by forgetting to conclude some arcs and overlooking character abilities. Like, Yato can teleport. He can literally teleport anywhere! ANYWHERE HE WANTS! HOW IS HE BEING HELD HOSTAGE?? TELEPORT AWAY! DID I MISS AN EPISODE? WHO IS THE ''FATHER'' DUDE, WHO IS THAT TEENAGER WHO (judging by the ending scene) IS THE SEED OF ALL EVIL? Who's remembering Yato?
But all that nitpickyness aside, this anime is truly amazing. It's story might be lacking, but the art is brilliant, especially the views of the regalias inside their weapons. The OST is goofy and funny and you can listen to it without the anime, and the OP is one of the best. Characters were so well done, especially Yato, and overall this anime was a blast to watch.
I'd recommend watching this. It's a good action comedy with truly heart wrenching and/or wholesome moments and amazing fight scenes.
