Review of Monster

It was very difficult to see someone criticizing this anime and, if you did, this person was told that "you didn't understand the work", or even "this is an adult anime, go back to Naruto". Few are the people who risk badmouthing a cult anime for fear of being criticized for it. About me? I generally don't care what others think about me, I form my own opinion about the animethat I watch, with Monster it was no different. Shall we start then?

Starting with the technical part of animation and soundtrack. The anime was released in the year 2004 by Madhouse studio, I have a lot of respect for this studio, not for how it is now, but for all its history of anime made. Monster's visuals unfortunately felt dated (unlike older animes such as Cowboy Bebop which seems to be incredibly prettier with each passing year), despite this the art and especially the soundtrack are great for the time that this anime was released.

But leaving the technical part and going to the story, characters and narrative, this is where the anime gets complicated. What is Monster all about? Monster is a story focused (or at least it would have been focused if there weren't so many parallel subplots) on the doctor Tenma. One day, Tenma decides to operate on a boy who had been shot in the head instead of the town mayor who had promised funds to the hospital. Due to this choice, Tenma's career is deeply shaken. A while later in the anime, Tenma discovers that the boy he saved isn't nearly as innocent as he seems and starts a game of cat and mouse between the two. An interesting and badass premise no? Well, a good premise is what often attracts a person to a work, but it's how the anime works on that premise that determines whether it's really good or not. Monster in my opinion lacks in this aspect. The narrative is abysmally slow and get lost in many, many subplots parallel to the main story, this for some is a quality, it makes the anime seem complex and entangled, when in reality it turns out to be an artifice of the author for the anime to seem complex when in fact he's just "stuffing sausage" as the people say in my country. Don't get me wrong some of my favorite works are slow anime, such as Mushishi and Kemono no Souja Erin, but a slow anime to be good has to take the time to get you closer to the characters, develop the story, and not go back and forth from subplots that contribute little to the work in general. The pace of the anime is so slow that, from episode 27 onwards, I started watching it at 1.5x (by the way, I recommend you watch the opening at that speed, trust me, it's really good lol). Combining with all this the anime ends on a laughable cliffhanger leaving the ending open... At least make a closed ending for the anime or don't make one ending at all.

Characters are another problem. I recognize that Monster has complex and well-developed characters, but does that necessarily mean they are good? Not necessarily. A character to be good needs to make you care about him in some way, he needs to be charismatic, he needs to fulfill the role that the work requires of him, most of the time without being superficial. In characters the work fails in the most basic of the ways, which is to make people care about the characters. There was only 1 character in the entire anime that I really cared about and worried about his safety, and that character was Grimmer. As for the great villain of the work, many claim to be the best villain ever created... which for me is very wrong! Want an example of a villain that is much better than him? Frederica Bernkastel from Umineko (manga and VN). In an anime focused on suspense, having only 1 character that the viewer cares about is fatal, the anime loses a lot of its impact. Another thing that took away most of the impact of the suspense is the great repetition of how the suspense scenes are made, always with a similar structure. This takes a lot of the suspense because the result becomes predictable and the anime doesn't even try to surprise you in this case. In a thriller this kills the purpose of the work.

Considering everything I've mentioned I think it's obvious why I didn't like Monster. For me, Monster, besides not being memorable, is an anime that I personally prefer to forget. What started with me having a huge hype, hoping this would become the first anime that I would give a real 10/10, turned into one of the biggest disappointments that I've had in this type of media. My rating for this anime is 3/10. That doesn't mean you shouldn't watch it, in fact I highly recommend you watch it, since the vast majority of people consider this anime a masterpiece. I wanted to like Monster, I really wanted to, but I couldn't. But I also couldn't be absent from giving my opinion seeing the overwhelming amount of reviews praising this anime.

Eu sempre ouvi falar de Monster e o quão boa, bem escrita e intelectual essa obra era. Muito dificilmente se via alguém criticando e se via essa pessoa era dita que "você não entendeu a obra", ou ainda "esse é um anime adulto, volta pro teu narutinho". Poucas são as pessoas que se arriscam falar mal de um anime cult com medo de ser criticado por isso. Quanto a mim? eu geralmente não me importo com o que os outros pensam sobre mim, eu formo minha própria opinião sobre as obras que eu assisto, com Monster não foi diferente. Vamos começar então?

Começando com a parte técnica de animação e trilha sonora. O anime foi lançado no ano de 2004 pelo estúdio Madhouse, eu tenho muito respeito por esse estúdio, não por como ele está agora, mas por toda a sua história de animes feitos. O visual de Monster infelizmente eu senti q está datado (diferente de animes mais antigos como por exemplo Cowboy Bebop que a cada ano que passa parece estar incrivelmente mais bonito), apesar disso a arte e principalmente a trilha sonora são ótimos para a época que este anime fora lançado.

Porém saindo da parte técnica e indo pra história, personagens e narrativa é aqui que o anime se complica. Do que se trata Monster? Monster é uma história focada (ou ao menos era pra ser focada se não fossem tantas subtramas paralelas) no médico Tenma. Um dia, Tenma decide operar um garoto vítima de um disparo na cabeça ao invés do prefeito da cidade que havia prometido fundos ao hospital. Devido a esta escolha a carreira do Tenma é profundamente abalada. Um tempo depois no anime, Tenma descobre que o garoto que ele salvou não é nem um pouco tão inocente quanto parecia e começa um jogo de gato e rato entre os dois. Premissa interessante e badass não? Bem, uma boa premissa é o que muitas vezes atrai uma pessoa pra uma obra, mas é como o anime vai trabalhar encima dessa premissa que determina se ele será realmente bom ou não. Monster em minha opinião peca neste aspecto. A narrativa é abismalmente lenta e se perde em muitas e muitas subtramas paralelas a história principal, isso para alguns é uma qualidade, faz o anime parecer complexo e emaranhado, quando na realidade acaba por ser um artifício do autor pro anime parecer complexo quando na verdade ele só está "enchendo linguiça" como se diz no meu país. Não me entendam errado algumas de minhas obras favoritas são animes lentos, tais como Mushishi e Kemono no Souja Erin, mas um anime lento pra ser bom tem que gastar o tempo pra te aproximar dos personagens, desenvolver a história, e não indo e vindo de subtramas q pouco contribuem com a obra em um geral. O ritmo do anime é tão lento que do episódio 27 em diante eu comecei a assistir ele em 1,5x (aliás, recomendo que assistam a abertura dele nessa velocidade, vai por mim, fica muito boa lol). Combinando com tudo isso o anime termina em um risível cliffhanger deixando o final em aberto... Pelo menos façam um final fechado pro anime ou não façam um.

Personagens são outro problema. Eu reconheço que Monster possui personagens complexos e bem desenvolvidos, mas isso necessariamente significa que eles são bons? Não necessariamente. Um personagem pra ser bom precisa fazer que você se importe com ele de alguma forma, precisa ser carismático, precisa cumprir bem o papel que a obra exige dele muitas vezes sem ser superficial. Os personagens de Monster a obra falha no mais básico que é fazer a pessoa se importar com os personagens. Só teve 1 personagem o anime todo que eu realmente me importei e me preocupei com a sua segurança e esse personagem foi o Grimmer. Quanto ao grande vilão da obra, muitos afirmam ser o melhor vilão já criado... o que pra mim está muito errado! Quer um exemplo de vilão que deixa ele no chinelo? Frederica Bernkastel de Umineko (mangá e VN). Em um anime voltado ao suspense ter só 1 personagem que o espectador se importa é fatal, o anime perde muito seu impacto. Outra coisa que tirou grande parte do impacto do suspense é a grande repetição de como as cenas de suspense são feitas, sempre com uma estrutura parecida. Isso tira boa parte do suspense pq o resultado se torna previsível e o anime nem sequer tenta te surpreender nesse caso. Em um suspense isso mata o objetivo da obra.

Considerando tudo que eu mencionei eu acho que ficou óbvio o porque eu não gostei da obra. Pra mim, Monster além de não ser memorável, é uma obra que eu pessoalmente prefiro esquecer. O que começou comigo tendo um hype enorme, esperando q este se tornasse o primeiro anime que eu daria um 10/10 de verdade, se tornou em uma das maiores decepções que eu já tive neste tipo de mídia. Minha nota pra esse anime é 3/10. Isso não significa que vocês não devem assistir, aliás eu altamente recomendo que vocês assistam, já que a grande maioria das pessoas considera este anime uma masterpiece. Eu queria ter gostado de Monster, queria muito mesmo, mas não consegui. Mas também não podia me ausentar de dar minha opinião vendo a esmagadora quantidade de reviews elogiando este anime.
