Review of Fairy Tail
Fairy Tail seems to be hated on a lot. And honestly I don’t blame the people who do. At it’s worst, Fairy Tail is downright horrible. However at its best Fairy Tail is one of the best Shonen has to offer. The characters are some of the most fun, enjoyable and memorable in all of Shonen. They are all the usual Shonen cast, but with added quirks to make them truly unique. Natsu is a typical Shonen protagonist. Lucy is the main girl who despite not being the strongest has a huge spark. Gray is the rival with the coolest powers. (And a stripping problem).Erza is the typical ‘tough’ girl, who happens to have a soft side. While her rival Mira is the typical ‘nice’ girl, who has a dark side. Gajeel, Juvia, Wendy. There are like another Fifteen characters I can list, but we’d be here all day. Every main character is at least three dimensional.
Villains are generally good. You have some average ones like The Oracion Seis. (They do get a lot better in the two subsequent series). However Jellal and Laxus are two fantastic villains. Showing that Fairy Tail has some fantastic writing.
All the Arcs keep you invested. There isn’t a ton of variety however each one creates new characters, dangers and stakes that keep you glued to your screen.
The action can leave a lot to be desired. Some of them are great. Natsu vs Jellal and Jellal vs Jura are two I always remember. However despite at one point being in the top five weekly selling mangas. The show never had the budget that something like My Hero academia or Attack on Titan had. So fights can look rather stiff. And like most people have pointed out. There are too many fights that end with the power of friendship. It’s not so bad in the first half of the show. But definitely during the Tenro Island arc onwards, it gets bad.
Fairy Tail is frustrating. However underneath all the horse s***, you’ll find gold in there.
