Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion

Eye-opening, opens your heart & soul, changed my perspective on certain things. Every episode is packed with mental drama and full of tension. In contrast and to alleviate, there are some heartwarming moments and scenes, with humane characters and their behavior. The battles left me on the edge of my seat – not just the physical ones, but also the mental ones. A fight is being depicted between the consciousness and conscience – leading to self-realization, answering many philosophical questions. Additionally, it touches on handful of real-world problematics - not directly, but in the form of metaphors. The animation wasn’t anything groundbreaking, today’s standards have rapidlyincreased throughout the times. I liked the mech and environment design, combined with thought out angled scenes. The edit and the cuts were in my opinion artistically placed, raising the aesthetics, but on the other hand making it harder to keep up. Funnily enough, sometimes I was too invested into admiring the visuals, resulting into me having to rewind and read back the subtitles. Also, the grain and 90s anime character visual design were something I really savored.
In terms of sound, it has a great and iconic opening song and endings of variety, the main female cast being the reason of that. Although I found few of the soundtrack choices questionable. The voice actors did an excellent job portraying the characters’ emotions and life paths, it even made me look up more of their work other then Evangelion. Sound effects were in my view by the time’s standards neat and detailed.

Hideaki Anno and the staff have created from my standpoint a work of art. People may say this show is overrated. I’ll admit, some episodes are hard to digest, hence I took multiple breaks watching it, but I now understand the hype it has and I think it deserves it. I was absolutely invested into this and loved every second of it.
