Review of Whisper of the Heart

This is a simple love story. This story is really about finding your purpose in life, it has great main characters, unfortunately the plot and side characters let the story down. Shizuku’s character is developed extremely well. She’s completely lost in life and doesn’t know what to do, until Seiji, an student at her school, encourages her to follow her passion. She discovers her passion after her struggling to figure out what to do in life. Her struggles of finding a sense of purpose in lifeis highly relateble to anyone. Seiji is an interesting character, but isn’t explored well. Seiji is not on screen much, soit’s hard to feel for him as a character. Also most of the other charactesrs aren’t interesting at all, like Shizuku’s best friend at school, her sister, mother and father are all one dimensional characters. Although Seiji’s grandfather was a nice addition to the cast, he would often give useful advice to Shizuku, and has an interesting backstory too.

The plot is very simple, and show’s Shizuku character well, although Shizuku’s and Suiji’s relationship felt too rushed. Getting to see Shizuku change and pursue her passion was very interesting, and heartfelt. There are also some cute scenes with Shizuku and Suiji, like when they play music together, or when the class is discussing rumours. Although it would of been nice to see them spend more time together

Visually the shots are stunning. Whether it’s overlooking the city, or in her room. And the music choice is very fitting, especially concrete road, a parody of country road is quite humorous and very entertaining.

This film is definitely worth watching if you’re into romances and slow paced movies, and it certainly does make you think of the meaning of your life, and to follow your dreams.
