Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
After finally watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, and having some time to think about it, I've come to the conclusion that it's one of the most unjustly hated series of all time next to FLCL. [This is a spoiler-free review] It seems like the people who don't like this show really don't understand the premise of the show at all. If you go into this show wanting some generic mecha action series then you're going to be disappointed. Neon Genesis Evangelion is a show about a cast of characters who each have their own personal issues which lead them to have difficulties connecting with others. It's a showthat explores these interpersonal difficulties people have.
One of the most common criticisms people who dislike this show give is that they think Shinji is annoying and that he should just get in the robot. I personally don't really like Shinji's dub voice and would recommend to anyone who started this show dubbed and disliked it to give it another try with the subbed version instead.
As for the people who say "just get in the robot," it seems like they're the same kind of people who would tell a depressed person to just stop being sad. If you came for generic mecha action and not for the interesting character dynamics, then this show isn't for you.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is a show with complex characters and interesting themes. The soundtrack is amazing and the visuals are usually pretty great (during the parts that didn't have production issues). The plot is kinda messy and confusing at times. There's a lot of things that go unexplained and are brought up for seemingly no reason. The final two episodes are paced a little too slowly for my tastes and probably could've been cut down into one episode.
Despite those ultimately minor issues, Evangelion is a show worth watching if you're interested in what it has to offer. I'd recommend watching it subbed.
