Review of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Personally I think Code Geass is a 10/10, though for the common person who hasn't watched the show 17 times, a 9/10 seems fair. Like the Prince of Egypt or Cobra Kai, Code Geass understands that the fundamental essence of the show is about the dynamic between Lelouch and Suzaku. Both characters fantastically revolve around each other and have a great yin/yang approach as young Lelouch is like s1 Suzaku and vise versa. Both mirror each other well, while creating a great dynamic that fosters character growth within the other. Hence as this is the foundation of the show, it is setting itself up forsuccess. As many bad reviews say the strategy of the show isn't as witty as they hoped, the show therefore sucks, rather they don't get the essence of the show. In truth the show is about the characters involved and how they grow, what they are willing to sacrifice for change. The sound effects are great for its time, the animation is a bid too yaoi for me (though they did it to get that yaoi money), and the music score works well for the show especially Madder Sky. Ultimately Code Geass is an Epic of Anime worthy to be compared to the Odyssey itself, not because it is perfect, though because how perfectly human its characters are. While you may not like where the show goes at points, it stays entertaining and follows its characters to their most logical and creative conclusion giving it the best conclusion I have ever seen in literature.
TLDR on the ending; stories for the longest time have been about passing a message, that's why your English teacher obsessed over themes. Code Geass understands the motivations and purposes of their characters within that theme, while still giving them agency and humanity. Most parts of literature set themselves to only conclude the characters or the theme, it is difficult to do both at the same time. Code Geass manages to not only perfectly finish its characters journeys and arcs with the conclusion, though also repeats the stories main theme in the most powerful way possible while still being entertaining. As stories end and begin to funnel, it is difficult to balance all these aspects while still staying logical, hence why they abandon themes for characters or vise versa, the show writers had the foresight to balance all these perfectly in a way no one else has been able to replicate in literature. Much like West Side Story is the best musical for how it balances its themes and leitmotifs, Code Geass is the best show to date for the same reasons. It doesn't mean you have to like it, though at the very least respect it.
