Review of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
Although I don't think I should write this review immediately after watching the whole thing in one sitting, ergo still under the influence of massive feels, here we go. Ano Hi etc etc is one of those series that you won't forget. Ever. Or at least for a very long time. It is a tear jerker to its core and a damn good one at that. By combining themes of loss and friendship they did an amazing job at delivering an enjoyable (wrong choice of words) and memorable anime. Story: The story revolves around a group of friends who try to confront their past and the traumathat still haunts them. As you would expect from a story like that, there is quite a lot of crying, flashbacks and more crying. However, not in a bad way. The way the story is set up keeps you interested and, quite frankly, tearing up quite often.
The story does not get full marks from me because I feel it could have done more with the main storyline, instead of quite often theming episodes around side stories, although them most often being quite meaningful and giving you a chance to sympathise with the characters.
Characters:
The characters are great. 9/10 great. Relatable, 'normal' characters, if you will. Each of the 6 main characters have their own 'thing' that sets them asides from the rest, and of course their own flaws, which are very important in Ano Hi. Once again, no full marks. Why? The characters were sometimes a bit too much themselves, especially Jintan. Mostly Jintan. The rest were pretty good. Also, props to the way the anime portrays the side characters, it gave the main characters more identity.
Fav character: Poppo
Art:
Not super amazing. Still good. It suited the story and the characters.
Sound:
Firstly, I have to say that I loved the OP. The harmonics in the intro made me shiver (in a good way) every time.
For the rest, the music really suited the atmosphere of the series. Not too flashy and not too dark. Perfect for an anime like this.
Enjoyment:
11/10 without a doubt. But that might still be the feels talking. Probably the feels. But that only underlines the fact that I enjoyed (once again, wrong choice of words) it very very much.
Overall
9/10 Great anime, with some minor improvements it could have been a true and amazing masterpiece. But still...
Would rewatch 10/10
