Yankee Girl in Love · review
Spoiler warning
This review may discuss plot details.
Koisuru Yankee Girl is just your run-of-the-mill romcom. While nothing spectacular, it's not like it's bad either. A regular 2 steps forward, one step back, the manga just chugs along from start to finish. A decent read for anyone who is a fan of romcoms, but if story is important to you, there isn't much to be found here. SPOILERS WARNING So let's break down Koisuru Yankee Girl into simpler categories. World Building: 0.5 / 2 Like most romance manga, the world takes a back seat to the story. I mean, there's school, a beach chapter, shopping, etc. To be blunt, the setting that this manga takes place inis not important to the story as a whole, so it just completely disregards it. However, although my rating in this category is quite low, it doesn't really affect the manga in any way, shape, or form.
Characters: 1 / 2
The characters follow the common trope that you find in most rom-coms. The girl is super shy, and the boy is also super shy but just better at hiding it. The side cast is generic too and also seems to just be along for the ride outside of having minor side stories happening to them. The one thing I will give this manga is how they build every character over time to differentiate them from one another and make them humanlike in a sense. However, there is no real growth for anyone in the cast, and it shows as you get further into the manga.
Plot: 0.5 / 2
There's a delinquent girl who likes a dude who's not a delinquent, and they get together but are shy about it. That's it. That's the whole story. I mean, it doesn't need much else, but like, it's uninspired at best.
Pacing: 0.5 / 2
Slow burn to the max. There is such limited progress; I don't actually know if I can say they really got any closer to each other. I mean the guy, yes, he develops more feelings for her as time passes, but the girl has little growth in that regard. It's a hike, boring but consistent (too consistent, honestly) from start to finish.
Bias: 1.5 / 2
While there isn't much this manga does, what this manga does do, it does well. The story was pretty enjoyable, and the comedy was half decent. The side characters and their stories really helped to freshen the story at times, and all the arcs this manga has are pretty well done. I actually liked this manga, but the core content to the story is just missing to get me more engaged with the story.
My original rating of 6 compared to my current rating of 4 is an unfortunate reality. This manga is just far too slow, with no real growth from anyone in the cast. The story lacks substance, and it really just brings down the whole manga as a whole from what it could be.
