Review of Devilman: Crybaby

Alright maybe I'm just stupid, but I really don't understand the hype. I was told this was a masterpiece. I was promised tears, everyone said that I would cry and be shocked with the message Devilman Crybaby portrays. I got none of it. What's the abstract concept? That human beings are complex and can be demons while also wanting to be good. Sorry, but that's new. Everyone has seen this same theme and probably everyone has experienced it in their real lives. The characters' development gets all muddled with the amount of sex and violence because none of the sex or violence really mean anythingor have any kind of weight. Humans have sex and are violent, is that something I should be shocked to find out. I will say that I think it's progressive to put that amount and explore sexuality in media, but only if doing those things actually mean something. What is the point in most of the sexually elements in the show? I have no clue because every character brushes over any sexual part and there's no meaningful interactions because of it. Plus, the gore isn't even that grotesque. I wasn't shocked in any way.

I just don't get the point of the anime, it's not a masterpiece. Cowboy Bebop is a masterpiece. Devilman Crybaby is no where near that level.

HOWEVER!!!

The art was pretty, especially in the ending scenes. I liked looking at this anime. The OST is phenomenal no question too. Also I liked the rapping; I enjoyed listening to it. So, it wasn't a complete waste of my time. I recommend if you like the trippy colorful art styles and cool character designs :)
