Review of The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?
This show is bland. So, terribly bland. The MC is the most generic self-insert that somehow has the mind of a kid even though he was an adult, and at no point do they show or explicitly talk about his old self. I find the part that makes some of these isekai so interesting is when they take elements or concepts from their past life and bring it into this one; while this show does have some of that, it's completely limited to the food and somehow no one questions this until the last episode of the season. The rest of the story is fine though,it's got some interesting elements at times but a lot of it is thrown out the window as MC fumbles about through his issues and somehow making bank with his teammates suddenly clearing things up offscreen and then telling him about it. A lot of it is just "noble bad, me good" but it's spiced up with some other interesting side plots which make it bearable to watch. No one gets seriously injured, no real problems come to the crew that they can't solve with brute force, etc.
The art is another major miss. There is barely any legitimate shots of action, and a lot of the time the screen fades to white or the fight scenes are entirely cut. The rest of the art is average but I was expecting and let down from how little action sequences there were. It was always a smart cut here or a just out of eyesight shot there and it left me disappointed and wanting to see some legitimately satisfying action.
The characters are as bland as the rest of the show. The only characters I legitimately enjoyed watching were some of the side characters that weren't fleshed out. Speaking of which, the main party is incredibly bland and one dimensional. No one bats an eye when something weird happens except for the MC, and while the show is self-aware and tries to turn that into a joke it gets boring fast.
Overall I wouldn't recommend. If you really want to watch it still just stop watching after the time skip, it's not worth progressing past then.
