Review of Devilman: Crybaby

This anime is a masterpiece thematically, but that's it. The thematic story arc was the star of the entire series. It beautifully showcased it’s own interpretation of humanity, where to love is to be human. The last 3 or so minutes of the final episode were stunning (you know what im talking about) and was the perfect resolution for that thematic arc. I could talk about it forever. While the animation was unique and characters were pretty well written, I’d rather listen to the soundtrack (which is absolutely stunning and I insist that you listen to it immediately even if you haven't seen the animeyet) than watch the show again. It’s a masterpiece, but thats it. The actual storytelling is poor. Character decisions often don’t make sense, and there are certain logistical plot holes that are impossible to ignore. The pacing is too fast, especially in the beginning. It is impossible to keep up with what is happening. It took me until halfway through the series to fully understand what was happening and why. I also believe that the twist at the end about a certain character was very obvious from the first episode, so instead of feeling satisfied by the reveal, I instead felt frustrated that the characters took so long to figure it out.

Overall, I could talk about this anime for a long time. Most of it would be complaining about all the things wrong with it, but part of that time would also be spent appreciating the thematic arc and talking about the last episode specifically. I don't understand why this is such a popular anime considering how different it is from typical anime - with animation style, story, and level of sex, drugs, and gore - but maybe it's just not my style.
