Review of Horimiya
Horimiya is your quintessential slice-of-life anime. There's no stress, no grand happenings, no exciting story. It's just a bunch of high school kids, doing high school kid things. It isn't necessarily a romantic story. There's romance, but it's frankly all quite down to earth. It isn't necessarily a comedy. There's jokes, but they all feel pretty standard and down to earth. It definitely isn't a drama, or an epic tale of adventure. There's nothing offensive, but also nothing insightful, inspirational or tear-inducing. All in all, it's just an anime to help pass the time...The story, as you might have guessed, is nothing to write home about.
The art is good, but given that it's 2021 even 'good' has kind of just lost its sheen these days. There's nothing particularly outstanding about it.. it's just your average modern day bogstandard art style.
The sound is just plain old good quality modern recorded sound. There's some fitting background music occasionally, but it's all very unobtrusive and forgettable..
The characters are well developed and are in my opinion the 'best' (still nothing to get super excited about) regarding this show. There's no clueless idiots oblivious to their surroundings, no 'stereotype to the max' one dimensional characters. They all have their quirks and character traits and flaws, and they seem actually believable. They're all down to earth, and actually resemble real people.. if not slightly a bit too mature for high school kids. It's hard to judge given my teenage years are more than a decade ago, but I feel like for sure they're too mature and well adjusted.
6 out of 10. I don't feel like I wasted my time.. but frankly, I'll probably forget about this show in a month.
