Review of Vermeil in Gold
tl;dr omae wa wizard harry-kun oh btw here's a succubus instead of an owl, have fun! meh. I had a hard time choosing between a 3 or 4 here so I decided to err on the side of caution. Kinsou no Vermeil isn't absolute garbage by any means but it certainly isn't stand-out either. I also have a few issues and annoyances with it which makes my rating for it below average. Kinsou no Vermeil falls into pretty much every single trope a wands and magic anime can fall into. We have a humble and hardworking male student of no particular background with strong latent powers ina glitzy magic school filled with strong possible rivals as well as a sprinkling of girls that are attracted to him for one reason or another. Then add in mysterious events and mysterious opponents along with a touch of the overpowered underdog and you have this and nearly every other magic academy anime that ever was.
So Kinsou no Vermeil fails to differentiate itself for plot or premise, and honestly doesn't do so hot with characters either since the three side characters in the squad are textbook childhood friend, nerd, and idiot. The student council is interesting and while not innovative at least it isn't stale. I've already covered MC and in the interest in not spoiling too much about Vermeil I'll just say that what you see is exactly what you get, with a couple of expected plot twists along the way. At least they tried though.
One thing that annoyed me a bit were the super-antagonists, which the anime hypes up as crazy op but then the fight sequences turn out lacklustre and uninspired. If there's one thing that really got to me was Iolite's voice which would have been a better fit in a more intense or dark anime like Re:Zero or even 86 but meh I guess if it annoyed me then they did their job?
Meh. Good way to describe this whole thing. Definitely could've been better and definitely could have been less cliche but at least I didn't really regret watching it. Who knows, you might like it better than I did.
