Review of Suzume
tldr Great movie with gorgeous animation, decent music, great dub, good characters and a simplistic but enjoyable story that hooks you in so a must watch for everyone. animation 10 out 10 With gorgeous background and great character animation there never was a shot the felt lacking and on the contrary many of them were super beyond the norm even for an anime movie. the use of pseudo 3d with a regular 2d animation style was so great it was almost unnoticeable. And it allow for some interesting camera angles, and 3d like shots that were unique and the final evil being was made to look so stunning, impactful, and unparalleled.
story 9 out 10
The story is simple but engaging that has both modern and classic feel to it. The use of social media and Spotify that is skillfully interwoven into the story adds to it relatability. On the classic side it involves supernatural beings such as the cat named Daijin and the havoc causing evil being, which make the story come together. That is a coming of age/adventure story that has it serious and comedic points that hit the right marks. Although sometimes it is a little to on the nose with its messaging where characters tell instead of show. It might be simple but the mystery hooks you right in the beginning and makes you want to find out more. By the end everything makes sense and there were not any noticeable plot holes.
characters 8 out 10
The main female character (fmc) is obviously Suzume while the Souta is the male lead (mc) whereas has the fmc is well develop with her background of a tragic event and dealing with some of that trauma throughout the story. She also is stubborn and gets involve with Souta on a hunch (or a feeling that she knew him) and not taking a no for an answer. And eventually ends up falling for him (which was kind of surprising) as they travel Japan in order to stop the evil being from causing havoc. We don't see such a thing from the mc who is a graduate student and is a "closer" someone who deals with these supernatural events. He explains the basics of the evil being and what he does but never in great detail. However, that is for the best since the movie is already 2 hours long so having extraneous detail would likely bogged the film down. Leaving the rest to the imagination seems to be the best choice. Also there were a few interesting supporting characters she meet along her journey along with her aunt and Daijin being some of the more memorable ones.
music 7 out 10
The music didn't really stand out so its neither great or horrible however it was disappointing that the whole song from the trailers (which is great) was only played when the credits were rolling and not during a climatic scene. I should also point out that I watch the dub version and the its pretty dang great. At the beginning the voice actress for the fmc didn't seem like the right fit for the role but after a few minutes it becomes clear she was perfect for the role.
enjoyment 10 out 10
Although there are probably more faults in the movie that I didn't notice I still had a great time watching it and would recommend to others even people who are generally not interested in anime (at least the 2 other people I dragged with me said so) . Would say its better than your name since I remember that one being hyped a lot and just thinking it was okay. Now I definitely need to see weathering with you to compare.
