JaJa Uma Quartet, or Wild Cards as it was released in English, is very ambitious for a short OVA. There's a lot that happens in each of the two episodes. But this anime never takes the time to explain what is happening. The first 30 seconds show an initial antagonist with no context into who, what, or why... who is then swiftly defeated and never seen again. Many side characters show up, but their motives are unclear. One of the four mahou shoujo (magical girls) Jo accuses each of these side characters of being behind a battle that is destroying the land. Eventually the OVAends with a vague ending that makes me think a third episode was planned but later canceled.
Overall, the anime could have been better (but still not incredible) if scenes were more focused and fleshed out. I feel like I've seen anime music videos that do a better job of telling a complete story in four minutes or less. The redeeming quality is the cool 90s character design and shots. If that nostalgia or aesthetic factor is enough to convince you to watch... it's a small commitment both in terms of time and mental processing. For anyone else I would skip JaJa Uma Quartet.
