Review of The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

Saiki Kusuo has psychic superpowers, but his main goal is just to go through life without attracting too much attention or being bothered by people. Unfortunately for him, he happens to be the main character in a comedy series. The show's hilarious. It's one thing for Saiki to spend $30 on a coffee jelly, it's another for him to think he could get mugged carrying it home. There's a background gag when he buys it where you see a kid point and hear him say something like "he's been staring at the coffee jellies for a really long time!" as his mother tugs him away. There'sanother bit in an episode where Saiki has to pretend he's a soda-related superhero, but then he gets in trouble with the cops, and they run into an alley... and you just hear a *pop* and some fizzing, followed by Saiki walking calmly out of the alley and explaining "it's just a little soda-infused obstruction of justice." In another episode, Saiki buys a Saiki K manga because, in a "funny coincidence", his face is on the cover. It's Simpsons-level absurdist gags and blink-and-you-miss-it jokes piled up on each other.

The English dub voice acting is superb. From Kaidou's tendency to freak out over everything, the kid Yuuta's excitement when he thinks Saiki's a secret superhero, Teruhashi's belief that she's the center of the universe (and her brother's creepy but hilarious obsession with her and dislike of Saiki), etc., etc., etc., every voice actor hits it out of the park. Balancing it all out is Saiki's world-weary narration (and "dry wit" as his dad might put it, even if his dad once says that Saiki's a "cold jerk" and he'd "like to punch him in the face".) This is a show that really ought to be much more popular.
