Vinland Saga Season 2

Review of Vinland Saga Season 2

Going into season two, I didn’t really know what to expect. It started much slower compared to the first season’s action-heavy tone. It honestly felt like going from watching a Rambo movie straight into a calm afternoon drama. But this tonal shift was extremely welcome. The second season brought deep introspection and heavy emotional weight, focusing on the inner struggles of a young man who desperately wants to leave his violent past behind but has no idea how to move forward without it. If you think about it, Thors’ death is a reflection of this — despite his longing for peace, he ran from his past, whicheventually caught up with him and brought all the problems back, shaping Thorfinn’s current internal battles.

This is such a powerful narrative that it genuinely frustrates me to see some negative comments attacking the author for this tonal change. It’s not only necessary — it’s essential.

What man hasn't faced these storms within himself? You can see yourself in every word, every choice, every character.
There is honor even among cowards, value in the weak, and hope for the afflicted and the lost.

My only critique is that the anime feels a bit too Japanized — characters constantly addressing each other with "san" or "sama," bowing frequently, or using exaggerated hand gestures. These cultural elements are distinctively Japanese and not Nordic at all. The studio also made the significant mistake of not incorporating Nordic music, instead using modern, generic background tracks. This is acceptable to most viewers, but really affects the immersion in what could have been an even richer experience. Shogun (2024) suffered from a similar issue, but was still widely acclaimed and won several awards.

Even with these minor flaws, Vinland Saga is undoubtedly a masterpiece. It’s thoughtful, emotionally powerful, and it moved me to tears several times — not just because it’s touching, but because it hits deep emotional scars that any man seeking self-improvement or redemption will find painfully familiar.

I believe this has been my most meaningful recent anime experience, and I’m happy to share this review with anyone open to self-reflection and who wants to see their own battles and choices mirrored on screen.

Sadly, the manga is still ongoing, and there’s no release date yet for the anime’s final season, but based on what I’ve seen so far, I highly recommend it.
