Super Robot Retsuden · review
While crossovers have a tendency to be slightly inconsistent with source material, taking liberties where necessary, Super Robot Retsuden wonderfully weaves the lore and universe of it's respective franchises together. There is a more serious tone to this than some of Go Nagai's other gore/sexual series, with specific focus on the combat between robots and interesting ways in which they can interact. This interaction is the strongest element, since the manga is great at putting each robots unique features into the story in a compatible form. The major flaw with fusing these series is that each is a bit of a formulaic take on oneanother. Upon merging worlds, aspects like the female sidekicks, the professors, and the friends tend to start blurring together. The lack of visual clarity in each characters design doesn't help in this regard. Thankfully, this manga doesn't focus on the humans as much as the robots and combat between them and their various forms. In many ways, this series is almost like a Justice League of Robots in the Dynamic universe. It's a shame there isn't more lore and story built out between the two with such a serious tone.
