Spoiler warning

This review may discuss plot details.

You ever read a series where the main takeaway is "Well that was profoundly unnecessary?" well that's this one in a nutshell. The strangely detailed antagonists? The repeated reminders of the maid's child-like body? The detour to another nation? The inn scene? The entire plotline of the volume 3 antagonist? All just profoundly unnecessary, not to mention unneeded in a series ostensibly about a necromancer who becomes a maid. It also just leaves so many questions, like basic questions about foundational aspects of the plotline that I don't think the author even though of when making the series. It's a super cute series about an unusual personmeeting a loner and them slowly falling in love, and if this was done over like 10 volumes, and maybe a few months in universe, it'd be a smash hit even with the weird unnecessary plot elements. But as it is three volumes just is not enough. There's not enough setup for the payoffs we get, not enough explanation of plot elements that would be the climactic point of entire volumes in other series, no enough reason for us to get invested knowing it's all going to end quickly.

And these are foundational issues the author either does not care about or didn't have time to, because there's multiple points where a character practically looks at the fourth wall and explains plot elements that should have been drip fed throughout the series as a whole.

It really does feel like the author created the premise, then got bored executing it and began throwing things at the wall to see what stuck, and if these elements were given the time to breathe and develop themselves that would be fine. As is the entire series feels like a rushed mess of disparate elements that are fighting for control all while two separate cute love triangle romances are happening in the background that we're far more invested in than the main plotline.
