Review of Sword Art Online
This story had promise, so it got a 6. Combining video games and anime should make a great recipe. It combines two related fandoms and video games are flexible enough to make any genre in anime. The problem was that they had a great idea and wasted it. The art was good, and the animation was great. I loved watching the action scenes, and they had great backgrounds. The people themselves were pretty basic looking, but they got it right though. I give the art a 9. The sound was mediocre and nothing really stood out to me. I'll givea 5.
The characters were okay at the beginning, but they became dreadful and downright pathetic at the end. The main character was a typical male MC: he had very little personality, wanted to save people, and quiet for the most part. The only thing different was that he could actually fight. I didn't mind him too much, but he did have a creepy scene with one of the girls in the anime (I'll talk about it below). The love interest, Asuna, was a great character. She could fight for herself and she didn't have a bad personality. I was happy that she wasn't too much of an annoying Tsundere. Though it did annoy me when they were playing house for a while and adopted a random girl. Especially when she started cooking and mostly contributed that.
The other characters is where this anime shines. I love the different personalities and how you had different situations. Some characters were rushing out and desperately trying to find a way out, and some were getting killed in the process. You had some characters who lost hope and just decided to make a peaceful life in the game by living in the cities where they conquered and settled. Then you had the evil people who wanted to kill others for fun and to take their stuff. You even had a form of government and military in the form of the knight guild. I personally liked the diversity and appreciated it.
Enjoyment was a 2. The enjoyment was very good, and the characters were wonderful. Though it was disturbing with the little girl and her being half dressed, and the main character having a fascination with her saying that she reminded him of his sister. WTF?! It was gross, and the anime had no joking tone with the scenes. Aside from that, the anime was fairly enjoyable and had many interesting side plots along with the overarching main plotline. It went down during the second season, or was it this one, when he basically started having those disturbing scenes with his sister and Asuna was a damsel in distress.
Overall, it was a 2. I hated how it ended, and those disturbing scenes really bugged me and were creepy.
